Creek runs
full force 365 days a year, fed from underground rivers in the lava
beds
of Mt. Lassen. The Lava flow from Mt. Lassen Has created many
caverns
under the valley by Lava cooling on the outside and still flowing in
the
center. The molten lave pours out leaving a hollow core.
One
of the best viewable examples of this is the Subway Cave between the
Ranch
and Old Station. Named Subway Cave because the smooth inner core looks
as though it was drilled out for a subway. Approximately 20 feet
in diameter and 1300 ft. long, you can hike through this cave. Be
sure to bring a latern or good flashlight and a warm jacket. The
Subway Cave maintains a cool temperature of 46°f year
round.
